Necklace Chain Length Guide: How to Choose the Perfect Fit
Finding Your Perfect Chain Length
The right chain length can make or break how a necklace looks and feels. Too short and it feels tight; too long and your pendant gets lost. This guide will help you choose the ideal length for every style and occasion.
Standard Chain Lengths Explained
14 inches (35cm) — Choker
Sits snugly around the base of the neck. Best for delicate chains without pendants, or very small charms. Suits V-necklines and off-the-shoulder tops.
16 inches (40cm) — Collar
Falls just below the collarbone. The most popular length for women's necklaces. Works beautifully with small to medium pendants and most necklines.
18 inches (45cm) — Princess
Our most recommended length. Sits on the upper chest and is universally flattering. Ideal for engraved pendants, bar necklaces, and QR code pieces.
20 inches (50cm) — Matinee
Falls between the collarbone and bust. A good choice for layering or for those who prefer a longer, more relaxed look.
24 inches (60cm) — Opera
A dramatic, longer length that works with larger pendants or for doubling as a shorter two-strand necklace.
How to Measure Your Ideal Chain Length
- Use a piece of string or a soft tape measure
- Wrap it around your neck at the length you prefer
- Add 2 inches to account for the pendant's drop
- Match the measurement to our size chart
Tips for Choosing Chain Length
- Consider your pendant — heavier pendants look better on slightly longer chains
- Think about neckline — the chain should complement, not compete with, your clothing
- Factor in layering — if you wear multiple necklaces, vary the lengths by 2-3 inches
- For men — 20-22 inches is typically the most comfortable length
